Tennessee raised and Seattle based artist McKinley Smith began pursuing a career in Graphic Design in 2008, enrolling in Middle Tennessee State University before dropping out and switching to a career in metal fabrication for the aerospace industry. It was there he found his true calling—working with his hands—and quickly began expanding the materials and applications to which he applied those skill sets. This reignited a spark for the arts so he returned to school, graduating in 2017 from the University of Washington in Seattle with a BA in Interdisciplinary Visual with a specialisation in Printmaking. He began working for Grand Image immediately after graduation as a studio assistant and quickly began incorporating his collected skills sets into GI’s studio practice, eventually leading to him spearheading the development of a brand new sculpture studio which he now leads.
